Accessible AI experiences need clear controls

Conversational interfaces can reduce effort, but they can also introduce ambiguity and motion for people using assistive technology. Keep the interaction understandable, optional and controllable.

Accessible AI experiences need clear controls
KRATVYA JOURNALProduct & UX
An AI interface may look like a simple text box, yet it can produce changing content, streaming updates, voice input and actions that affect other parts of a product. These behaviours can be difficult to use when status is unclear or when the interface assumes everyone can type, hear or interpret an open-ended response. Accessibility belongs in the interaction model from the start. Keep a direct path to core tasks Do not make a conversational assistant the only way to find a service or complete an essential action. Preserve predictable navigation and forms with clear labels, instructions and error recovery. Let people choose whether an assistant is useful for their task. A stable route also helps users who prefer scanning over dialogue. Communicate changing states Announce when a response is being prepared without flooding screen readers with every streamed token. Keep focus in a predictable place and provide a clear way to stop generation. Mark headings, lists and links semantically so long answers can be navigated. Do not rely on colour alone to show confidence, urgency or completion. Make voice and errors recoverable Offer visible alternatives to speech, readable transcripts and a way to correct misunderstood input. Explain what information will be sent and when a tool may take an action. Provide specific errors and a way back to the last stable state. Avoid timeouts that discard work without warning. Test with people and assistive tools Use keyboard-only checks, screen readers, magnification, reduced-motion preferences and real tasks with disabled participants where possible. Automated checks catch some issues but cannot judge whether an answer is understandable or an action is safely controllable. Accessible AI is not a separate mode; it is an interface that remains clear and usable when the model is uncertain or the user interacts differently.
